Please find attached West Region Championship fixtures for the next few weeks which were ratified at last nights meeting. I also attach an update on the U.14 hurling and football league playoffs

The football championships will commence during the last week of August and these fixtures will be ratified at our next meeting on Wednesday August 22nd.

All Semi Finals and finals of U.14 Football and hurling leagues to be played by that meeting as we do not want them clashing with U.12 cups and U.14 Football Championships during the month of September. I would urge clubs to contact each other immediately and agree on a date and come back to me as soon as possible so that I can make arrangements for the game.

All league fixtures have now been circulated to the clubs. Any outstanding U.16 and Minor hurling and football leagues to be played by September 30th. An automatic 50 euro fine per fixture will apply to all unplayed games on that date. We have the website up to date now and you will see the unplayed games under fixtures for each code and grade.

Please find attached the proposed fixtures for the next meeting in Mallow at 8.30. CCC will meet at 7.30.

Make sure your coaches get these fixtures straight away.

There will be a fixtures only meeting every Wednesday for August at 8.30 after the 9th.

Once leagues are finished I will upload the finals on the web site. The reason for the extra meetings is once clubs have being knocked out of a competition it will open up dates to play other competitions. We will also be looking to double up fixtures where possible with Championship or league fixtures the earlier date being used for the double up.
I will try to give as much notice as possible when issuing these fixtures but clubs must be prepared to play these fixtures as they arise on a weekly basis. I hope to issue fixture list twice per week.
If any Club sees an opportunity to bring forward any Championship or league fixture the board will make every effort to facilitate..
The u14 HL semi final is now on the 19-8 with the final on the 24th. U14 Championship quarter final is on the 28-8, semi on the 7-9 and the final on 16-9
The u18 FL Final on the 17th has been moved to the 19-8 and the u16 FL semi and the u12FL games on the 19th have being swapped to the 17th due to the leaving cert results on the 16th.
It is imperative that all clubs are represented at all the meetings. No discussions on the proposals at the meeting will be entertained afterwards.

BALLINORA GAA CLUB

The club was formally established in 1924 but the origins of the GAA in the parish go back to before the official formation of the Association. The first official recorded game was a hurling match versus Kinsale in 1864. The club has a proud history with a recent highlight being victory in the Mid Cork Junior hurling championship in 2016 after a 19 year gap.

Ballinora GAA club has experienced significant recent growth & currently caters for approx 200 juvenile members with an energetic and committed group of c.45 coaches playing an active part in developing these young players. The club currently has two playing facilities. Significant investment in capital facilities has occurred in recent years with more planned. This will cater for all playing & non playing members in the community, both male and female, for many years to come.

History was made on April 17th 2017 in Ballincollig, when the U14 footballers won the Cork Division 2 in Féile Peil for the first time. Ballinora beat Ibane Gaels in a great Cork final having won 5 games to reach that stage. Ballinora represented Cork at the National finals in Cavan/Monaghan on the weekend of June 23-25 and were beaten after extra Time by Maynooth in the Division 2 Quarter Final after winning all 3 group games. These group matches were against teams from Derry, Monaghan and Cavan. It was a memorable Féile weekend on and off the pitch with particular mention to our fantastic hosts from Ballyhaise Co. Cavan.

This achievement continues a strong heritage in Féile for the Ballinora club over the past number of years and a huge boost to the Ballinora underage section.

Congratulations to the Cork U17 team who defeated Dublin by two points today in the All-Ireland U17 hurling final at Croke Park.

CORK 1-19 DUBLIN 1-17

By Jackie Cahill at Croke Park

CORK were crowned inaugural All-Ireland U17 hurling champions at Croke Park this afternoon

The Rebels held out for a two-point victory against a Dublin side reduced to 14 players in the second half, when midfielder Tom Aherne was dismissed in the 42nd minute for a second bookable offence. Fintan Clandillon’s Sky Blues worked incredibly hard and gave it everything but Cork, with a healthy sprinkling of minor stars who’ll be back at Croke Park next Sunday for an All-Ireland semi-final, managed to keep them at arm’s length. Dublin will rue Aherne’s red card, while goalkeeper Eddie Gibbons, who netted a first half penalty, sent another one hurtling over the crossbar in the 37th minute.

When Aherne was sent off, Dublin were two points down, before John Considine’s Cork stretched the gap to three points. On four more occasions before the finish, Cork led by three and while Dublin did get within one, with eight minutes left, they could never draw level. At half-time, Cork held a slender one-point lead, ahead by 1-9 to 1-8.

Dublin opened better and stormed into an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead, Tom Aherne, Billy Ryan, Liam Murphy (free) and Kevin Kirwan all on target in an unanswered spell, after Blake Murphy had put Cork ahead with a superb opening score. But Cork worked their way back to level at 0-5 each by the 14th minute, with minor panellists Daire Connery, Colin O’Brien (scorer of 1-10 in the U17 semi-final victory over Galway) and Declan Hanlon leading the charge. Dublin struck for goal in the 20th minute, as Gibbons slammed home a superb penalty after Kirwan was fouled. That score put Dublin 1-6 to 0-6 clear and the lead moved out to four points when captain Mark Grogan landed a score.

But Cork hit 1-3 without reply between the 24th and 29th minutes to gain the whip hand, the goal coming from full-forward Joe Stack in the 28th minute. Aaron Walsh Barry sent a long ball towards the Dublin square and Stack outmuscled his marker Kevin Burke, brother of senior player Donal, before finding the net. Blake Murphy registered his second point for Cork to move the young Rebels 1-9 to 1-7 in front, before Liam Murphy’s third free of the half kept Dublin in touch at the break.

Early in the second period, the sides were level twice, at 1-10 and 1-11 apiece, but there was a feeling that Cork were turning the screw, even before Aherne picked up that second yellow card. After Liam Murphy was hauled down by Cork goalkeeper Eoin Davis, Gibbons had that second penalty chance but his effort cleared the crossbar.

Cork managed to hold firm in a tense finish, as sub Owen McCarthy came off the bench to score two crucial points. The counties will meet again next Sunday at Croke Park – with a place in the Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final on offer for the winners.

Scorers for Cork:

Daire Connery 0-6 (5f), Colin O’Brien 0-5 (3f), Joe Stack 1-0, Declan Hanlon 0-3, Blake Murphy and Owen McCarthy 0-2 each, Cormac O’Brien 0-1.
