2018 Master Fixtures plan published

The GAA today published its Master Fixtures plan for the 2018 season.

The Allianz Football and Hurling Leagues will both begin on Saturday, January 27, with All-Ireland Football champions Dublin playing Kildare, and Cork and Kilkenny clashing in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League.

The Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Final will take place on Saturday evening, March 24th, while the Division 1 and Division 2 Allianz Football Finals will take place on Easter Sunday, April 1st.

Thereafter the month of April will be ring-fenced for club activity.

The Provincial Football Championships will begin on May 6th with two matches in the Connacht Championship as Leitrim play New York and Sligo play London.

The Provincial Hurling Championships will begin on May 12th when Galway and Offaly clash in the Leinster Championship.

The 2018 Munster Football Final will take place on Saturday night, June 23rd, while the Leinster and Munster Hurling Finals will be played on the same day – Sunday July 1st.

Why are both Hurling and Football starting on January 28th?

Our guiding principle in developing the 2018 Master Fixtures plan was to ensure that as much of April as possible could be kept free for clubs. To that end, there are more “double” weekends in the league than before (4 in total) and the leagues are starting in the last weekend in January (normally, the football league would start on the first week in February; the hurling on the 2nd week).

Why is Hurling League final scheduled for a Saturday?

Given the need to complete the leagues by the start of April (and to preserve that Month for clubs), the last round of the football league and the Hurling league final required to be scheduled on the same weekend. C.C.C.C felt that it would be wrong to schedule both on the same day (not to mention the possibilities of a Cork or a Dublin or a Galway being in the Hurling final and involved in a big football game on the same day) – to that end, it was obvious that one of either the final round of the football league or the Hurling Final needed to be on the Saturday.

Given the availability of suitable venues with floodlights in the Southern half of the Country, it was felt that it was the right time to trial the playing of the Hurling League final on a Saturday evening. We feel there is a terrific marketing opportunity there for the playing of a national senior final under floodlights.

It should be noted that if Tipperary and Kilkenny were to meet in the Allianz Hurling League final, that game would take place in Nowlan Park (due to an arrangement between the two Counties). In that scenario, the Hurling League final would take place on the Sunday.

Why is the Munster Football Final on a Saturday night?

The final round of the Munster Hurling Championship was scheduled for the day on which we had initially planned to play the Munster Football Final. Rather than move the Munster Hurling games to a Saturday, it was felt that it was a good time to experiment with a Provincial Final on a Saturday night. It again offers a good promotional and marketing opportunity. It will be reviewed next year but this is envisioned as being part of a 3 year experimental rota with Leinster and Ulster, whereby if required one of those provinces would also look at playing a Provincial Football final on a Saturday night in the coming years.

Why are the Leinster and Munster Hurling Finals on the same day?

In order to avoid a “6 day turnaround” in the football championship, the necessity of playing the Munster and Leinster Hurling finals on the same day had to be considered. This had never been done before as C.C.C.C and the provinces had always sought to maximise our opportunities to promote hurling in the context of a championship (before the recent changes agreed) that had very few high profile games in the early part of the season. However, given the huge number of high profile hurling games that will be staged in the provinces in 2018, we do not see the same issues arising as might have in previous years had such a proposal been floated.

BANDON UNDERAGE GAA CLUB caters for training underage players in both hurling and football codes, with a child centred approach and philosophy that recognises that the welfare of the child player is paramount. With an active coaching & mentoring committee supporting a Club Coaching Plan, the maximum player participation and personal development of both hurling and football skills for our underage players can be achieved.

PRO and Richard Murphy, Development Officer, Cork GAA at a function at the Clayton Silversprings Hotel, Cork. Picture John Tarrant

To encourage more members to join the Bandon GAA club and raise the public profile of GAA organisation, the Bandon Underage GAA club has implemented an active School Coaching Programme in four of Bandon primary schools providing minimum 18 weeks coaching during the school year.

Bandon Underage GAA supports over 20 teams across both hurling and football codes. To support these teams Bandon Underage GAA currently have over eighty (80) coaches registered with seventy (70) coaches having completed Foundation Level Coaching course. Bandon GAA is in unique situation in Cork to have forty five (45) coaches with Advanced Award 1 Coaching course qualified up to Club Adult Team level and currently with one coach with Advanced Award 2 Coaching course for coaching Cork Development Squads and Inter County teams.

Bandon Juvenile GAA honoured at the monthly Rebel Óg Awards hosted in the Clayton Silversprings Hotel were Ian Doyle, Chairperson Bandon Underage GAA; Paddy Murray, Minor Manager; Ciarán McCarthy, Minor Hurling captain; Tim Twohig, U15 Hurling captain; Cian Burke, U15 Football captain; Sean Ahern, U12 Hurling captain; Finbarr Lynch, U15 Manager; Carl O’Mahony, U15 Selector; John Ahern, U12 Selector and Miriam Murphy, Rebel Óg Judging Panel. Promotion of the GAA games in Bandon encouraged 265 Young Players aged 6-13 from around the Bandon catchment area to attend Bandon GAA Cúl Camp from 14-18th August 2017 that was fully supervised and coached by Bandon Underage GAA coaches.

The Bandon GAA club players contributed to the success of local secondary school teams over past 12 months with Hamilton High School winning the Senior Hurling Lord Mayor Cup & Cork College U14A Football cups and St. Brogan’s College winning U14 County Hurling championship. For the Development squads, Bandon Underage GAA continue to support Cork Coaching with Bandon players successfully progressing onto Carbery U13 and Cork U14, U15 and U17 development squads.

Benchmark 2020 is a Club award Scheme under the auspicious of Cork Coaching & Games which is to promote best practice in coaching and games development at club level. Bandon GAA was one of only 3 clubs in West Cork (18 total in Cork County) to successfully achieve Gold level for 2016 (a repeat over 2015). The successful participation and achieving those high levels in the Benchmark 2020 demonstrates to players, coaches, parents and supporters that Bandon GAA has best practice in GAA coaching and games development.

Bandon GAA Hurling & Football club fosters and develops skills in both codes from our Nursery programme up to Adult level. The benefits of managing and promoting both codes were seen in 2016 with Bandon adult teams achieving Senior Hurling and Premier Intermediate Football status. The success of Bandon GAA adult level teams has encouraged our underage teams for further success during 2017.
Rebel Óg County 2017 U15A Hurling Championship – Bandon’s first game in the U15A Hurling competition was when they put eight goals and twenty three points past Sliabh Rua. For the semi-final, Bandon travelled to East Cork to play Lisgoold. Bandon were too strong for East Cork side as they won by 26 points. The U15A County Final played against Mayfield in mid-July was a repeat of the U14A County Hurling final in 2016 where Bandon came out on top. In this year’s U15 County Hurling final, both teams had some highs and lows as they battled it out for the important scores. Bandon dominated the first half with half time score of 3-7 to 0-3 but Youghal came back storming back in second half to get back into contention.  Youghal never gave up as they scored two goals but they couldn’t hold back the hard work of the West Cork side. Final score Bandon 3-14 to Youghal 2-7.

Rebel Óg County 2017 U15A Football Championship – Bandon claimed Rebel Og U15A County Football Championship title following their win over Wolfe Tones (Kanturk) in mid August in Macroom. Plaudits went to both teams for an absolutely classic football encounter, with end to end good attacking football, top class defending, and every player, mentor, and supporter giving their all. In the end Bandon showed what a class outfit this group of players are developing into. There were no losers in this game but Bandon won out in the end.

The Bandon GAA club now hosts the dual 2017 U15A County Football and Hurling Champions. A remarkable achievement for this team.

The passion and commitment shown by the Bandon underage players embodies all that is good about the GAA and bodes well for the future of Bandon GAA Hurling & Football club.
