Cúl Camps are currently under way and over the summer months Rebel Og will be trying to share some of the magic from each camp.

Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps provide boys and girls – between the ages of 6 and 13 – with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximising enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games.

Here in Cork we have many clubs that run a Cúl Camp during the summer holidays and one thing is evident from the large numbers of young children attending, they are popular healthy and great fun for all involved. Each year the numbers of children attending these camps is growing and each year the children come away with new gear, tops, bags etc which can be seen at underage games, school activities, days out all year round.

Activities are GAME BASED, a strong emphasis is placed on skill acquisition, and are organised in an age appropriate manner with a view to:

  • optimising learning
  • enhancing friendships
  • improving physical & psychological well being
  • promoting school and club links

KEY FEATURES ABOUT KELLOGG’S GAA CÚL CAMPS

The camps are structured so that a different aspect of the game is worked on each day.
The programme involves coaching specific skills of the game and the opportunity for children to put into practice what they have learned through small sided games.

On the last day of the camp a “blitz” will be organised to provide each child with an introduction to competitive games.

Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps – are run throughout the summer from Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 2.30pm, in all 32 Counties and overseas.

Attendance is open to primary school children aged 6 years to 13 years.

On Monday 9th April 2018 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Cork this years Kelloggs Cúl Camps were launched.

On the evening Paudie O’Brien, Cork GDA & Cúl Camp Coordinator spoke about the increase in the numbers attending camps in Cork county each year stating that nearly every club in Cork run the annual Cúl Camp and that many of today’s senior players started their GAA career at Cúl Camps.

Its great to see so many young people taking part with almost 17,000 young children taking part last year we expect the numbers to rise again this year. “It just goes to show that the work being down at grassroots level by all the clubs in the County really does bring new players into the clubs. Its great for the young players, both boys and girls alike on the fields wearing the latest Cúl Camp gear during the summer months having fun learning our games with friends and families all taking part in our Cúl Camps”

L-R – Shane Supple GDA, Seamie Harnedy, Patrick Collins, David Griffin, Conor Lehane (Cork Senior Hurlers) & Paudie O’Brien GDA with Daniel Garde, James Forrest, Jack Walsh,& Rian Savage players from Lisgoold & Midleton clubs at the launch of Cork Kelloggs Cúl Camps 2018 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh

It was great to see Seamie Harnedy, Patrick Collins, David Griffin & Conor Lehane, all members Cork Senior Hurling panel prersent for the launch on the night. These players all have fond memories of taking part in their own Cúl Camps, and over the last number of years have been taking time out of their busy schedules to visit the camps around the county.

Each year we see bigger numbers of young children taking part in the Kelloggs Cúl Camps and as they grow older those same children then become young coaches at the camps, under the guidance of the local club coaches and committees. The numbers of young people doing the TY foundation courses in Post Primary schools bears out that the interest is there and that during the summer these young coaches have a huge part to play in the Cúl Camps. When you add in the cost for families to take part in the camp you have a fun filled week of hurling, football, camogie, rounders, handball and lots of games to develop the skills of our national games for the players.

Back and Cúler than ever, the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps programme for 2018 was launched today by author, model and mother of two, Pippa O’Connor and impressionist and GAA fan, Oliver Callan.

To celebrate the launch, Kellogg’s kicked off the campaign by opening Ireland’s first-ever pop-up cereal café. GAA All-Stars Andy Moran, Danny Sutcliffe, Rena Buckley and Niamh Hegarty helped serve-up breakfast to members of the public before taking part in a Q&A session with MC’s Pippa and Oliver, who left a lasting impression on proceedings.

A record-breaking 142,467 children took part in a Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp last year, an increase of 12 per cent on the previous year. One in every four children aged between six and 13 attended Ireland’s biggest summer camps for children in 2017 enjoying an action-packed week learning new skills, making friends and being active while having fun.

A Cúl Camp’s First

Kellogg’s transformed Dublin’s Urchin Restaurant on St Stephen’s Green into a pop-up cereal café as part of a colourful takeover to launch Kellogg’s GAA Cul Camps 2018. Members of the public were invited to drop by and take some time out for a nourishing breakfast, with the added treat of having their Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies served to them by the GAA All-Stars.

Guests could choose from a breakfast menu full of nutritious choices such as Kellogg’s cereals topped with berries, banana, nuts or natural yogurt, complemented by high-fibre, wholemeal bread, fruit and unsweetened juice to help kick-start their day.

A firm believer in the importance of a healthy lifestyle, Pippa O’Connor said: “Having two young sons has really made me focus on just how essential good nutrition and sports activities are for children.

“I believe in the benefits of starting each day with a balanced breakfast. It helps in getting my sons Louis and Ollie’s day off to a great start. Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps are a fantastic way for children to be active whilst having fun. That’s what childhood should ultimately be about.”

At the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps, children receive training in hurling, camogie, football and ladies football and some camps offer rounders and handball.  There are also camps as far spread as the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, the US, Canada and across Europe.

Taking place in July and August, the week-long Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps are priced at €60, dropping to €50 for a second child and just €40 for a third and any additional children. All participants receive a GAA zipped training top, jersey and backpack.

Meet the All-Stars

One camp in each province will receive a surprise visit from one of the four Kellogg’s Cúl Camps’ GAA ambassadors; Andy Moran (Mayo footballer), Danny Sutcliffe, (Dublin hurler), Rena Buckley (Cork Camogie player) or Niamh Hegarty (Donegal ladies footballer).

Ruth Hughes, head of Kellogg’s Ireland said: “Kellogg’s is committed to promoting and encouraging a healthy lifestyle and that is why we became involved with Cúl Camps seven years ago.  There will be tens of thousands of children getting active this summer at a Cúl Camp and a good breakfast is the best way to help them kick-start their day, whether on or off the pitch.”

GAA president, John Horan, who attended the launch pop-up cereal café said: “For families and communities all over Ireland, the summer simply wouldn’t be the same without Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps. Many children have benefited from the camps and this year’s recruits can expect to enjoy an action-packed week of fun and activity.  Like Kellogg’s, we want to help children to stay active across the summer and Cúl Camps are the perfect platform for Ireland’s youngsters to get out, get active and have fun.”

Everyone who registers for a Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp can enter a competition for a chance to win a €100 sports gear voucher every day. To enter, consumers must pick up a promotional pack of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes or Rice Krispies in stores from April (T&Cs apply)
