Speaking at the announcement of the classic at Castlemartyr Golf Club, Rebel Óg Cathaoirleach, John Purcell, said that Rebel Óg is committed to the youth of Cork GAA, and to the development squads.  Rebel Óg has implemented a significant restructuring of the Development Squad model in the past three years has seen Cork G.A.A. form strategic alliances with the Mardyke Arena at U.C.C. and the C.I.T. The objective is to provide opportunities for our potential inter county players of the future to develop the required technical, tactical and physical skills required to be play at the highest level in the future.  Ultimately, the Academy aspires towards providing a Pathway to Excellence for all young GAA Players in Cork.

This week, we announced the names of 400 boys from the ages of U14 to U17 who will be involved in the Development Squad training panels in both football and hurling for the summer programme. These young people will benefit, throughout the summer, from the experience and coaching skills of Academy mentors such as John Meyler, Anthony Lynch, Fergus Ryan, Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Derek Kavanagh.

The recent victories of the Cork Minor Hurlers & Footballers in their Munster Championship games bodes well for 2015 and is a direct result of  work with the Development Squads in recent years. We hope that the Academy programme will further augment our fortunes at inter county level and at club level in the years ahead.

By participating in the Rebel Óg - Cork GAA  Classic, you will be playing your part in helping us promote the schools of excellence and development squads academy programmes.

Incorporated into this Classic is the Cork GAA Clubs’ Golf Championship which was played initially last year. This proved to be a highly sought after title and Buttevant defend their title this year.

In addition a selection of signature holes has been incorporated to add a novelty aspect, with several prizes to be won.
